What cardiovascular age actually means
Cardiovascular age — also called heart age or vascular age — estimates how old your heart and blood vessels function, compared with your chronological age. It's built from markers that track cardiovascular health: resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, blood pressure where available, and cardio fitness. A 45-year-old with the resting heart rate, recovery and fitness typical of a healthy 38-year-old has a cardiovascular age around 38. It's an estimate, not a diagnosis — but it turns several scattered signals into one number you can actually follow.
Why the gap matters more than the number
The useful part isn't the age itself — it's the gap between your cardiovascular age and your real age. Running a few years younger suggests your heart is in good shape for your age; running several years older is a nudge that some modifiable risk markers are drifting in the wrong direction. A difference of a year or two either way is mostly noise — these estimates aren't precise to the month. It's a gap of roughly three years or more, held over time, that's worth paying attention to.
What pushes it up — and down
Cardiovascular age is largely driven by things you can change. Better cardio fitness (a higher VO₂ max), a lower resting heart rate, and healthy heart-rate variability all pull it down. Poor sleep, heavy alcohol, chronic stress, weight gain and a sedentary stretch push it up. That's what makes it motivating rather than fatalistic: unlike your birthday, this number responds to how you live — over weeks and months, not days.
How to lower your heart age
The levers are the unglamorous, well-evidenced ones. Regular zone 2 cardio to build aerobic base, enough quality sleep, keeping alcohol modest, and managing stress all improve the underlying markers — resting heart rate and HRV in particular. Don't expect overnight change: cardiovascular age moves slowly, so the honest way to judge progress is the multi-month trend, not a single reading.
