Alcohol-free beer and your sleep: what actually changes
Alcohol-free beer has stopped being a punchline. If you have swapped an evening beer for one, you have accidentally set up one of the cleanest experiments a wearable can run — same ritual, same glass, same hour, one variable removed. The result usually shows on the very first night, and it shows in a specific place.

What alcohol actually does to a night
It is a sedative, so it shortens the time it takes you to fall asleep, and that is the part people notice and mistake for helping. What follows is the problem. Alcohol suppresses REM in the first half of the night, and as your body metabolises it the sedation lifts into a rebound: fragmented sleep, more awakenings, and an early-hours wake-up that feels unearned. Meanwhile your heart works through the night — resting heart rate rises, heart-rate variability falls, and both stay shifted until the alcohol has cleared.
The dose and the timing matter more than the drink. Two beers with dinner and two beers at eleven are not the same night, because what your ring records is largely the metabolic work still happening after lights out.
"Alcohol-free" is usually not zero
Worth knowing before you draw conclusions: in most European markets a beer may be labelled alcohol-free at or below 0.5% ABV, and only 0.0% means what it says. That residual is small enough to sit in the same range as a very ripe banana or some breads, and it is not what will move your sleep. If your numbers change after the swap, the cause is the alcohol you stopped drinking — not the trace you kept.
There are two genuine caveats, and neither is about intoxication. A late drink of any kind is still fluid before bed, which is its own reason to wake at four. And some alcohol-free beers carry a fair amount of sugar, which is worth a glance if you are drinking several.
What to watch, and when
Look at overnight resting heart rate and HRV first — they respond faster and more reliably than a sleep score, and they are where alcohol shows up most plainly. Then look at the shape of the night: fewer awakenings in the second half, and deep sleep returning to your usual share. A sleep score can move for a dozen reasons; the heart-rate pattern after a drinking night is fairly characteristic once you have seen your own.
Expect the comparison to need more than one night on each side. A single alcohol-free evening against a single beer evening is two data points and a coincidence.
