Recovery, training load and knowing when to rest

Recovery is where wearable data earns its keep, because the cost of a hard session is invisible in the moment and obvious in the overnight numbers. A raised resting heart rate, a suppressed HRV and a poorer night are the body paying for yesterday, and they arrive whether or not the session felt hard.

The posts here cover how long recovery actually takes after different kinds of work, what accumulating load looks like before it becomes overtraining, and how to tell a bad night from a bad week. They also cover the less obvious costs — a long walk with weight, a flight, a heatwave — which are easy to treat as free and are not.
