Why is my resting heart rate rising? Reading the trend, not the number

There is a difference between a resting heart rate that is high and one that is rising. The first is a level, and levels vary enormously between healthy people for reasons you cannot change. The second is a change in you, measured against you, and that is the version worth paying attention to — because a handful of things cause it, they leave different fingerprints, and one of them is a reason to see a doctor.

A trend, not a number

Overnight resting heart rate is one of the most stable things a ring measures: for most people the seven-day average moves by only two or three beats from week to week. That stability is what makes a drift meaningful. Two beats up on Tuesday is nothing; a seven-day average that has climbed five beats over a month and stayed there is a genuine signal. Ignore the daily value and read the rolling line, and ignore population tables entirely — the question is never whether 62 is normal, it is why yours went from 54 to 62.

Rule out the boring causes first

Before anything interesting: alcohol, heat, dehydration, late meals, short sleep. Any of these raises overnight heart rate by several beats, and the reason they masquerade as a trend is that they cluster — a hot fortnight, a holiday with wine every night, a stressful month of five-hour nights. Look at what changed in your life a week before the line started climbing. Summer alone explains an enormous number of these questions: sleeping in a warm room raises overnight heart rate measurably, and a heatwave will lift a whole month's average.

Illness: the fastest and most common cause

An infection typically produces a sharp step up — five to ten beats or more in a single night — usually with a raised body temperature, a fall in HRV and a higher respiratory rate alongside it. Frequently this arrives a day or two before you feel anything, which is the one genuinely predictive thing consumer wearables do reasonably well. The distinguishing feature is the shape: illness is a cliff and then a slow return over several days to a week, not a gradual climb. If your line stepped rather than drifted, this is almost always the answer.

Training: overreaching and deconditioning look opposite but both raise it

Heavy training raises resting heart rate for a day or two after hard sessions — normal, and it settles. What is not normal is a resting heart rate that stays elevated for one to two weeks along with suppressed HRV, worse sleep and flat performance: that is the classic non-functional overreaching picture, and the treatment is a genuine easy week rather than pushing through. The opposite cause is slower and sneakier: stopping training. Detraining raises resting heart rate by several beats over weeks to months, and because it creeps, people often reach for exotic explanations when the real one is that they stopped running in November.

The slower drivers

Chronic stress, a new medication, weight change, pregnancy, thyroid problems, anaemia, and cutting back on regular alcohol or caffeine can all shift the level over weeks — some upward, some down. Stimulants and some antidepressants raise it; beta blockers lower it substantially. Ageing moves it very slowly, not over a season. If the rise coincides with starting or stopping any medication, that is the first thing to check with whoever prescribed it, and not something to manage by training harder.

When it warrants a clinician

Data aside, some things are not for a tracker. See a doctor if a persistently raised resting heart rate comes with chest pain or pressure, breathlessness at rest or with light effort, palpitations or an irregular pulse, dizziness or fainting, swelling in the legs, or unexplained weight loss and heat intolerance. Also worth a visit: a rise of ten beats or more that persists for weeks with no explanation you can find, or a resting heart rate consistently above 100 at rest. None of that means something is wrong — it means the question is now a clinical one rather than a data one.
