Sleeping in a heatwave: why hot nights wreck your sleep

Your body has to cool down to fall asleep. Core temperature drops by roughly a degree as you drift off, and stays low through the night — that drop is part of the mechanism, not a side effect. A hot bedroom blocks it, which is why heatwave nights feel broken in a way that has nothing to do with how tired you were.

Why heat and sleep are physically incompatible

Falling asleep requires dumping heat, mostly through the skin of your hands and feet, and that only works if the room is cooler than you are. When it isn’t, sleep onset stretches out and the night fragments. REM sleep suffers most, for an odd reason: during REM your body largely stops regulating its own temperature, so it is unusually exposed to whatever the room is doing. That is why hot nights tend to cost you dream sleep specifically, and why the early hours — when REM is concentrated — are the ones that fall apart.

What a hot night looks like in your data

Cooling the room beats cooling yourself, so if you have any means of dropping the air temperature, that is the highest-value move. A warm — not cold — shower an hour or two before bed works better than it sounds: it drives blood to the skin and accelerates the temperature drop afterwards. Keep your feet and hands uncovered, since they are your main radiators. And go lighter on bedding than on nightwear; a sheet you can throw off beats a duvet you sweat under.

What not to bother doing

Don’t chase the lost sleep with a long lie-in the next day — it pushes your schedule later and compounds the problem across a multi-day hot spell, when schedule regularity is one of the few things still under your control. Don’t drink a lot of fluid right before bed to compensate; hydrate through the evening instead, or you will trade heat wakings for bathroom ones. And don’t treat a run of low readiness scores during a heatwave as a training verdict. It is environmental load, it is temporary, and easing off slightly is a reasonable response to it — panicking is not.
