Oura sleep stages, explained
Deep, REM, light, awake — your Oura Ring breaks the night into stages, but the app rarely tells you what they mean for you. Vitra Health reads each stage against your personal baseline and names the behaviours that move them, in plain English.
Total sleep time is the headline; the stages are the substance. Two seven-hour nights can be completely different — one rich in deep and REM, the other shallow and broken. Vitra makes that difference legible.
What each stage is
- Deep
- Physically restorative — tissue repair, immune function. Front-loaded early in the night.
- REM
- Memory consolidation and mood regulation. Weighted toward the second half of the night.
- Light
- The transitional majority of the night; not wasted, but the least restorative.
- Awake
- Brief wake-ups are normal; a rising trend is worth noticing.
What Vitra adds
Each stage is plotted against your rolling baseline with a normal-range band, so you see when last night's deep or REM was genuinely low for you — not just lower than a generic ideal. Then it ties the change to your tagged behaviours: “rooms below 19°C give you +22 min of deep sleep,” “alcohol after 8pm costs you −40 min.” Personal, specific, local.
General education, not medical advice. Stage estimates from a ring are not polysomnography, and no consumer device diagnoses a sleep disorder. Talk to a clinician if you have concerns.
